Teaching Responsible AI Use in Writing Class
Banning AI does not teach judgment. This framework helps teachers train students to use AI transparently and responsibly.
Students are already using AI. The classroom question is no longer if they use it, but how they use it. Responsible use means the student remains the author and uses AI to strengthen, not replace, thinking.
Start with explicit boundaries: AI can suggest revisions, identify unclear logic, and help with grammar. AI cannot generate final claims or write full paragraphs that the student submits as their own.
Next, require process evidence. Students should show how drafts changed and what feedback shaped those changes. This shifts grading away from a single polished product and toward writing decisions over time.
Better Doc was built for this model. Teachers can choose which AI features are enabled per assignment and review detailed writing history. Students still get support, but the process stays visible and teachable.
Responsible AI instruction prepares students for college and work where AI tools are normal. Better Doc helps schools teach those habits without losing academic integrity.
